LAW Fund has three funding priorities to strengthen civil equal justice in Washington:

  • The Campaign for Equal Justice (The Campaign): The Campaign is the backbone of LAW Fund's fundraising efforts. The Campaign is a unified statewide annual fundraising effort to raise undesignated contributions that provide the year-in and year-out program support for civil legal aid providers throughout the state. These fungible donations from individuals, law firms, corporations and organizations are highly prized due to their flexibility of use, which allows for funds to be directed to the areas of greatest need, as outlined in the Access to Justice Board's Plan for the Delivery of Civil Legal Services to Low Income Persons in Washington State (“State Plan”), a living document which guides the allocation of funds in the most equitable manner possible.
  • The Laurel Rubin Farm Worker Justice Project: LAW Fund's solitary restricted, annually-supported fund, honors the memory of Laurel Rubin, a Northwest Justice Project attorney who died tragically while traveling to meet with farmworker clients in 1998. The Fund supports ten to twelve week summer internships providing law students the opportunity to work for farm workers' rights in Washington State. Laurel Rubin interns work under the supervision of legal aid services attorneys.

  • The Endowment for Equal Justice Fund: Established in 1998, the Endowment for Equal Justice seeks to provide a base of support for legal services in perpetuity to relieve civil legal aid programs from dependence upon unpredictable and inadequate levels of funding. Gifts to the endowment are invested to grow over time. To date, the Endowment exceeds $2.4 million thanks to leadership gifts from Seattle law firm Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Lawrence True and Linda Brown Foundation, and the Alice and Russell True Foundation. Once the goal of $10 million is reached, funds will be disbursed to legal aid providers statewide. The long-range, aspirational goal for the endowment is $200 million. To learn more about the Endowment for Equal Justice, or to make a contribution, please contact Karen Falkingham, Director of LAW Fund, at (206) 623-5261.
